Power Source

This Aeromatic 1912 model is very unique in that not only is it a dual time watch, but it is split in half by both an automatic mechanical seconds movement and a 2x dual time zone quartz.

This automatic/quartz classic design with dual time is made right in Germany by Aeromatic 1912. This high quality timepiece is built using excellent quality materials and a wonderful split power source.

The Good

This 44mm men’s watch is made from a solid, polished stainless steel with a fixed bezel and shining steel case back. In true Aeromatic form, this timepiece is both gorgeous and mechanical, as well as unusual.

The analog display features a black dial where the subdials at 3 and 9 o’clock sit, as well as a partially skeletonized vertical design in the center of the dial from 12 to 6 o’clock. There is a main dial that does not tell the hour or minute, but rather the seconds. The seconds track via a beautiful, slim steel hand with an arrow point. The outer dial uses second markings, stick indexes, and a Roman Numeral at VII and VI.

When it comes to telling the hour and minute, this Aeromatic is dual time — this means that on each side of the dial, you have a unique subdial intended for keeping time. The 9 o’clock subdial features Roman Numerals from I to XII with both a stainless steel hour and minute hand keeping the time on this dial. The 3 o’clock subdial features Arabic Numerals from 1 to 12 and also uses stainless steel hour and minute hands to keep the time — this is the dual time feature. You can set the time quickly and easily using the crowns on each side of the watch case. You can set it for the same time or keep track of the time in another time zone if you wish.

If you are looking for where the iconic “Aeromatic 1912” logo is on this semi-skeletonized dial, you will see it actually just below the 12 o’clock position in its traditional place, applied underneath the mineral glass, as opposed to on the dial itself.

The final aspect of the design is the lovely black leather strap that is simple but captures the masculinity of the timepiece and carries the black design over quite well.

The Bad

There are no real negative aspects to this Aeromatic 1912. It would be nice to see a better water resistance, but it’s not terrible. The water resistance is 5 ATM (50 meters), buta 10 ATM (100 meter) resistance would be ideal.

Functionality

The functionality of this dual time zone watch is outstanding. With an automatic movement and a 2x quartz movement, this watch splits the timekeeping duties between the two movements. This German-made Aeromatic uses quality parts and a great polished steel construction. The modern yet industrial look of this mechanical piece is beautiful.

Highlights

The beauty of this dual time zone skeleton is both the unique automatic/quartz combination (in which each movement controls separate features), as well as how the dial displays the set times. One would think that a dual time zone watch with two separate movements would be too complicated to set and use — however, on the contrary, Aeromatic makes it extremely simple to set and enjoy.

At the 3 and 9 o’clock positions on the outside of the steel case are the crowns — one for each dual time zone subdial. You simply wind each dial to the desired time using the crown on the designated time. In addition, the long, slim seconds hand tracks along the outer rim of the black dial in a sweeping movement. This seconds hand uses the separate automatic movement while the dual time zone subdials use the adjustable quartz movement.

Pricing

This oddity in modern watchmaking retails for $350, but you can purchase this watch brand new and unworn for only $169.99.
