The Good
There are a ton of excellent features to this Diesel.
The luminous hands and dial features are one of the best seen on a man’s watch. Every part of the dial that is white, as seen below, is luminous and glows blue in the dark. With incredible detail, this light is easy to read, attractive, and allows you to tell time through all of your watch’s features and not just the hour and minute.
In addition to the chronograph function and the calendar date window at the 3 o’clock position, this Diesel Mega Chief features three subdials located centrally in the dial at the 6, 9, and 12 o’clock positions.
Each subdial is clearly marked as to what kind of time it is tracking, so there is no guesswork for anyone unfamiliar with subdials. The 6 o’clock is a 30 second dial, the 9 o’clock is a 60 minute dial, and the 12 o’clock dial is a 1/10th of a second tracker.
The water resistance of this model is also pretty decent at 165 feet (50 meters).
The Bad
Most Diesel men’s watches are oversized (which is typically considered any watch case size 50mm or greater), so when a man purchases a Diesel, they tend to understand that the case is rather large. However, for those who aren’t as aware, this watch may look extremely big on some wrists. If you have never purchased a watch that measured over 50mm, you should go into a store and try on an oversized watch just to see how it fits you and looks on you.
This Mega Chief’s case measures 59mm x 51mm, so it is definitely a big one! This is not a negative aspect to this watch, but this was an appropriate place to remind our readers of the size versus a regular 42 to 45mm watch.
Other than the large size that Diesel is known for, this watch has pretty great features for the price. It is functional, has great additional features, is made of quality materials, has a long lasting movement, and even has luminous properties.
Functionality
The Mega Chief does not include any features or functions that it cannot handle. Its functionality is excellent and well worth the price.
With a chronograph feature and three subdials displaying: 60 second, 60 minute, and 1/10th of a second, each is clearly identified so there is no guesswork as to what each subdial does.
The Quartz movement is made of quality materials and will last you years.
The luminous hands and markers are much better than the average luminescence found on timepieces and makes it very easy to see at night. Every single part of the dial that features white is luminous, from the hands to indexes, to the subdial hands and the smallest of second markings around the rim. The glow shows up blue rather than white, which is a fantastic look.
The Highlights
This dark and masculine Diesel Mega Chief is not only an extremely interesting watch to look at, but has its highlights in its functionality as well. With a large “12” Arabic Numeral at the top and stick indices for the rest of the hour markers, this Diesel features a great-looking black and white design.
The 59mm x 51mm case is made from a black ion-plated stainless steel, as is the beautiful black ion-plated stainless steel bracelet. The bezel is fixed and made from black IP SS as well, but is thin and does not get in the way of the massive dial face.
An interesting design feature is the outer rim of the black dial. While it is common to find second markings around the outer rim, this Diesel make timekeeping easy with the second indicator central to each hour index (e.g., 25 second shown at 5 o’clock / 30 second shown at 6 o’clock), as well as second markings around the outer rim that show Arabic Numerals indicating the between-hours (e.g. between 6 and 7 o’clock “6.5” is applied at the center second/minute marker.
The white hands and white applied indexes, numerals, and markings against the black dial and black ion-plating of the entire watch makes for a dark watch that looks accented with white rather than equally two-toned, which is good for men who don’t want too much to distract from this dark look.
