Power Source
This timepiece uses a Swiss-made Analog & Digital (ana-digi) movement with a synchronized analog and digital function. This power source allows you to track the time, dual time, set an alarm, use the chronograph function, and view the full date (month, day, year) via the digital layer.
The Good
The Nixon Duo Gunmetal features a modernized and classy dial design using a two-layer analog-digital display. This two-layer dial consists of combination of a top analog portion with features a chronograph subdial, and the bottom digital portion which houses the digital display. However, despite the ana-digi separation, the entire dial utilizes the traditional analog timekeeping function with hour indexes around the entire outer rim of the dial with a two-hand main in the middle.
The dial is a contemporary brown and black split combination with applied and cutout indices, custom molded hands, luminous markings, and an EL backlight. The digital display is a negative LCD with a backlight.
The case is quite beautiful and follows the polished gunmetal design throughout the entire construction of the watch. The case measures in at 46mm, which is 4mm away from being “oversized.” So, this is definitely a larger faced timepiece that can really show off the modernized and grown-up ana-digi dial.
The case is made of solid stainless steel and is fitted with a hardened mineral crystal to protect the dial. The backing is a solid stainless steel screw-down, which is what gives this watch the ability to have such a great water resistance (100 meters / 330 feet). With a matching polished stainless steel (gunmetal finish) bezel, bracelet, clasp, and even crown and pushers made of stainless steel, this Duo Gunmetal by Nixon is a very solid piece in design and functionality.
The bracelet is a 26mm to 22mm custom stainless steel, 3 link bracelet design, and features a stainless steel double locking clasp with micro-adjust.
The Bad
It is unknown to us how long exactly the battery will last — it is definitely of excellent quality but with a digital and analog display plus a chronograph function and other features, it is unknown whether the battery will last one year or two/three.
Functionality
Functionally, the Nixon Duo Gunmetal is as functional as it is upscale in design. The analog and digital movement has been reinvented in this piece, with a unique combination of ana-digi that makes this watch a real elegant and grown-up piece.
The movement is Swiss-made and of the best quality. It offers users a synchronized analog and digital function so that you always have the precise time both on your digital display and analog. If you choose, you can display the full date via the digital display — you can turn this feature on or off — but the digital section can display another time zone (day and date).
You can also view analog time via the analog hour indexes located in the traditional position around the outer rim of the entire dial face. With an hour, and minute hands marking time over the entire dial, you can check the time in analog form or digital at just a glance. The dial hands are custom molded and with luminous markings, checking the time at night is easy regardless of which display you look at. With a negative LCD with a backlight, the digital display will not sap the battery.
With solid stainless steel all around, a screw-down stainless steel case back, hardened mineral crystal protecting the dial, a solid bezel, and double locking clasp, this watch is functionally very secure. The water resistance is an added bonus and a great asset.
Highlights
The modern classic dial design and gunmetal finish of the entire watch is of such an upscale design that it is guaranteed to be a head-turner. Regardless of what kind of crowd you run with, this timepiece is elegant, casual, and can withstand submersion into water up to 10 ATM.
The use of polished, solid, stainless steel finished in Gunmetal is such a strong look for this piece. With all exterior components matching, there is no distracting bracelet design or multi-tone look that makes a watch look piecemeal. On the contrary, this uniform gunmetal look offers a solid and elegant design.
The dial is also extremely attractive and it showcases the separation of the dial just enough to highlight it but not make it junky or unattractive. From 3 to 9 o’clock, there is the separation of the two-layer dial, where the dual-tone meets. Around the entire dial is the analog function, complete with an hour and minute hand, which feature luminous properties, just like the applied hour indices. There is an analog subdial at the 12 o’clock position, filled in black, which offers the functionality for the seconds and and the chronograph feature.
The digital display is located on the bottom half of the timepiece. With a negative LCD screen, the screen displays the time in digital format and there is an option to include a second time zone as well as a full calendar readout.
